About The Proposal

Proposed Development

Iberdrola Australia has commenced feasibility investigations into a large-scale wind farm development in the Furracabad and Matheson area, approximately 9–10 kilometres west of the Glen Innes town centre.

The proposed Reddestone Wind Farm is being investigated on the same ridgeline and within the same project footprint as the former Glen Innes Wind Farm (Mod 4) proposal, which was refused by the NSW Minister for Planning in 2020. Although the project is now being pursued by a different proponent under a different name, it is effectively a revival of the former Glen Innes Wind Farm proposal.

The proposed development area is located within a predominantly rural farming district made up of long-established cattle and sheep grazing properties, with some families having lived and farmed in the Furracabad and Matheson Valleys for generations.

Due to the proximity of the project area to Glen Innes, the proposed turbines would be located only 9–10 kilometres from the town centre, making this a project that has the potential to affect not only local landholders but the broader Glen Innes community.

Key Issues of Concern

Important Community Statement

Please read before reviewing the concerns below

Many residents have expressed serious concerns regarding the long-term impacts this industrial-scale development would have on the Furracabad and Matheson Valleys and the surrounding rural communities. These concerns are not about opposition to renewable energy in general, but rather the suitability of this particular location and the significant, irreversible impacts the proposed development would have on nearby residents, farming operations, rural amenity, environmental values, and the long-term character of these valleys.

!

These concerns are not based on opposition to renewable energy in general.

The proposed development, comprising 25 or more wind turbines standing approximately 250 metres high, together with access roads and extensive construction activity, would fundamentally alter the rural landscape. Residents are concerned that such a large-scale industrial project would reduce the desirability, liveability and long-term market value of neighbouring non-host properties. Many local families have invested generations of hard work into their homes, farms and businesses and are deeply concerned about the financial impacts and social division this development would create within the community.

A major concern consistently raised by non-host landowners is the devaluation of surrounding rural properties. Residents also believe the project would create additional costs and difficulties for farming operations, including aerial fertiliser application, pest eradication activities, stock management and day-to-day farm productivity.

Further concerns raised by residents include visual intrusion across the valley landscapes, ongoing noise impacts, shadow flicker, aviation warning lights, increased heavy vehicle traffic, damage and pressure on local roads, and major disruption during the construction phase. The scale of the proposal — including 25 towers supporting 75 blades of approximately 100 metres in length — would introduce a significant industrial presence into what is currently a quiet rural farming district.

Residents are also concerned about potential impacts on livestock, biodiversity, native wildlife, environmental values and bushfire risk. In addition, there is strong concern regarding the long-term social impacts on the community, including division between host and non-host landowners, pressure placed on neighbouring residents, and the permanent change to the identity and character of the Furracabad and Matheson Valleys.

Developments of this scale are considered incompatible with the existing rural landscape, lifestyle and sense of community that local families have worked hard to preserve over many decades.

  • •Vibration impacts on nearby properties
  • •Continual operational noise in quiet rural environment

Property & Amenity

  • •Loss of rural amenity and character
  • •Potential property value impacts
  • •Reduced attractiveness for future residents

  • •Livestock behaviour disruption
  • •Biosecurity and weed spread risks

Heavy Vehicle Traffic

  • •Road damage and maintenance costs
  • •Increased heavy vehicle traffic through rural areas
  • •Oversized transport movements
  • •Safety impacts on rural roads

Fire Risk

  • •Turbine fire risks and lightning strike hazards
  • •Challenges for rural fire response
  • •Impacts on aerial firefighting operations
  • •Increased fire danger during dry conditions

Aviation Lighting

  • •Ongoing night-time visual intrusion
  • •Loss of dark rural skies
  • •Impacts on rural amenity and lifestyle
  • •Continual lighting visible across the valleys

Decommissioning & Uncertainty

  • •Uncertainty about post-project timeline
  • •Responsibility for decommissioning costs
  • •Turbine and infrastructure removal
  • •Long-term land rehabilitation and repowering risks

Community Position

Many residents believe the Furracabad & Matheson Valleys are not appropriate locations for a development of this scale and industrial nature, especially in the Matheson Valley which would experience cumulative effects from wind farms on both sides.

There is strong concern that the long-term impacts on residents, farming families and the character of these valleys may outweigh any proposed short-term financial or community grant benefits.

Our Beliefs

The views of nearby non-host landowners must be properly considered in the planning process

Independent assessments are essential before approving such a significant development

Long-term community impacts must not be underestimated or minimised

The valleys' agricultural and rural heritage should be protected for future generations
